Joker Swap 101

There’s a moment that happens at almost every mahjong table.

Someone makes an exposure that includes a joker. You glance down at your rack…

and there it is. The natural tile that the joker is standing in for.

You see that joker.

You want that joker.

You reach for the joker.

Not so fast.

It’s not that joker swaps are complicated but there's a specific order that must be followed.

And when you don’t know the order, it’s easy to move too quickly, or hesitate, or even (at some tables) have your hand declared ... dead!

Here’s the simple version:

A joker swap can only happen on your turn.

And there’s a sequence:

Draw (or call) → expose (if needed) → joker swap → discard

Wanna' see it step-by-step:

Wait your turn. then

If you draw a tile:
Draw → swap → discard

If you call a tile:
Call → expose → swap → discard

That’s the entire flow. That's the rule. Now you know the order.
